Dr Patricia Kiely, standards and research adviser at Optometry Australia, has been selected to join the World Council of Optometry’s Legislation, Registration and Standards Committee.
She is the only Australian on the committee of 14 members.
There is one member each from Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Lebanon, Norway, Philippines, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, and the UK, and the USA has four members.
Dr Kiely said she had been nominated by Optometry Australia to serve on the committee, which is responsible for conducting an annual online survey on scope of practice, and analysing and disseminating the results.
The committee also advises the WCO governing board on the development and implementation of international standards of clinical practice. Committee members are invited to attend the WCO’s biennial conference.
Dr Kiely has been appointed for a two-year term. She was awarded a PhD in Optometry from the University of Melbourne in 1983.
