The Australian College of Optometry has released the first in a planned series of online programs for optometrists, starting with glaucoma.

The Glaucoma Self-Assessment Program, ACO-GAP, enables optometrists to tailor ongoing education based on evidence-based data related to their knowledge and level of skill development.

Optometrists complete 90 questions that mimic the clinical process of diagnosis and receive an immediate confidential score against nine core skills, and a benchmark score against others who have completed the program.

ACO CEO Maureen O’Keefe said the series would be valuable for practising optometrists who sought to identify learning opportunities and test their skills against industry standards and their peers.

Early career optometrists who may not have had extensive experience identifying specific eye conditions such as glaucoma, and optometrists who may be returning to the workforce, may find it useful as a refresher tool.

Developed by ACO optometrists and piloted among the wider optometry profession, ACO-GAP takes between 45 and 75 minutes to complete. Successful completion entitles participants to a certificate of completion from the ACO and CPD points. Participants who do not successfully complete the program will be directed to repeat the test.

ACO is planning subsequent online self-assessment programs for diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and anterior eye.

Each program costs $100 plus GST. For information and to apply visit www.aco.org.au.
