This Chair-side Reference will assist optometrists to distinguish the different stages and phenotypes of age-related macular degeneration.
It was produced by the Centre for Eye Health in conjunction with Optometry NSW/ACT, and is reproduced in Pharma with their permission.
The chair-side reference provides general information only and may not be applicable to atypical cases. Fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography are gold standard procedures for the diagnosis of neovascular AMD and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, respectively; however, they are outside the scope of the optometric practice and so are not included.
It remains controversial whether polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, cuticular drusen and familial dominant drusen represent distinct clinical entities or subtypes of AMD.
