OBA CPD requirements
Optometrists must complete a minimum of 80 points of CPD over two registration periods. A registration period runs from 1 December to 30 November the following year. Of the 80 points over the two registration periods:
- minimum of 24 points must be face-to-face
- 60 of the 80 points must be clinical CPD
- no more than 20 of the 80 points from suppliers or manufacturers, and
- 40 of the 80 points in education related to therapeutic prescribing (if applicable)
- In addition to the CPD points requirement, training in CPR in the last 3 years
Does the requirement apply to all optometrists
Yes. The CPD & CPR requirement applies to all registered optometrists who hold general registration with AHPRA. The only exception is if you have been granted an exemption or are in the non-practicing category. Exemptions are granted at the discretion of the Optometry Board of Australia.

Four types of CPD activities
- Face-to-face (clinical)
- Independent learning (clinical)
- Academic (clinical) - for those optometrists employed in the formal academic sector full-time
Accredited or non-accredited CPD
It is up to you. Optometrists are able to meet the CPD requirements by undertaking accredited or non-accredited CPD from any of the activity types listed above however accredited CPD is much easier for a number of reasons.
- accredited CPD activities are those that have been approved as meeting certain criteria
- a list of accredited activities with the associated points is published on the Optometry Australia CPD Calendar
- when you attend accredited CPD your points are recorded for you by Eye on CPD, Optometry Australia
Non-accredited CPD activities include overseas conferences, or when a training provider does not apply for accreditation in time. Non-accredited CPD provides flexibility for optometrists to count any self-directed learning they do that does not go through the official accreditation channels. However optometrists are responsible for allocating the CPD points applicable to the activity themselves and keeping their CPD record up to date.

- 2014 and 2015 points - log in to your Member Hub and go to "My CPD Record"
- 2013 points - contact Eye on CPD for a record of your 2013 CPD points, email@example.com
CPD attendance points not recorded
Every effort is made to ensure that the CPD attendance information Eye on CPD collate is accurate and up to date. This depends on you providing your correct member number when you attend CPD and the training provider forwarding that information correctly. Other reasons that information about a course you attend is missing includes:
- the course is too recent and the CPD provider has not forwarded your information yet; or
- the course was not accredited in the first place
In all cases you should contact the CPD Provider and not Eye on CPD if your points are not appearing as it is their responsibility to ensure the correct attendance information is provided on your behalf. You should also check with the training provider if the course is accredited. If not, you will need to keep these records yourself.
Optometrists who are not OA members will have their CPD points and attendance recorded by Eye on CPD however will not be able to track these online and will not be able to access personalised support. Non members are able to purchase a service from Eye on CPD to cover the costs of recording and providing this information to non members at the end of each registation period. Keeping my own CPD records
Yes, you are required to maintain your own records of CPD participation as part of your registration as an optometrist. While OA will maintain accurate records of participation in accredited CPD activities (where we receive information from the training provider) to help supplement your CPD portfolio, you will have to keep additional information as required by the Optometry Board.
For details on what records you need to keep please see the Optometry Board CPD section. This can be summarised as:
- a self-assessment of personal CPD needs and outcomes
- a record of all CPD activities undertaken during the previous 3 years
- how the CPD undertaken relates to your practice of optometry
Your record can include:
- Receipts or other proof of attendance from courses undertaken or conferences attended
- Certificates issued on completion of CPD activities by an approved training or education provider
- Records of any self-directed CPD, including what activity was undertaken, for how long and how many point you allocate

How to tell if a course is accredited
You should always check to see if a course is accredited before enrolling. The Optometry Board CPD logo can only be used for accredited courses, and shows the maximum number of CPD points that can be earned by completing the course in full (in some cases, partial completion of the course may earn a lower number of points). Courses that are non-clinical, therapeutic or provided by manufacturers or suppliers are indicated by the letters N, T and M respectively. Here are some examples of common CPD logos.
A logo that has a single number will indicate the maximum number of points available for completing the activity. If there is an N, M or T following the number it indicates the number of non-clinical, therapeutic and manufacturer/supplier points for the activity. The first logo below would be for a CPD activity that has 3 points. The second logo would indicate an activity with 3 non-clinical points available. The third logo would be for a CPD activity that has 6 therapeutic points available, while the fourth logo would indicate a CPD activity that has 8 CPD points for completing the activity of which 4 therapeutic points are available.
I don't have enough points

You may be advised to contact the Optometry Board and advise them of this.
It is a requirement for all optometrists to be trained in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) as part of their Continuing Professional Development. When renewing registration with the Optometry Board of Australia each optometrist will have to declare they have completed CPR training within the previous 3 years.
