The functions of the Optometry Board of Australia, as supported by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) include:

  • registering optometrists
  • developing standards, codes and guidelines
  • handling notifications and complaints
  • assessing overseas trained practitioners

Registration standards

The Optometry Board has registration standards for criminal history, English language, professional indemnity, professional development and recency of practice.

Registration renewal

All optometrists must renew their registration by November 30 each year. If you renew after November 30 you will need to pay a late fee. If you do not renew by 1 January you will be removed from the register.

The Optometry Board has developed policies, codes and guidelines to provide guidance to optometrists.
