Volunteering Opportunity in Fiji

One of our colleagues, Matt Bradford, is involved in a support project called Marine Reach Fiji. They are coordinating another Outreach from 8-21 October 2017 and are hopeful of getting an Optometrist to volunteer to join them.

Costs for the program is $1100 FJ ($720 AUD approx.) plus airfares. The program fee covers the transportation, food, accommodation, uniform and materials used for the outreach and the registration for the professional. (Without promising it, we may be able to talk about any OPHL company provisioning and some offset if we have that option.)

Applications to volunteer in the October Outreach are due by July preferably. Further information about Marine Reach Fiji can be found via their website

Three Fantastic Opportunities to Own Your Own Practice

ONE:  Rare chance to purchase an established practice on Sydney’s Northern Beaches! Whilst only small, this local icon has been firmly established for 20 years now - and there is still plenty of scope to grow the practice. It's a fantastic opportunity for someone to get a start, especially in a pleasant location on the northern beaches. A new owner could buy either walk in/walkout or with a transition period. It is priced as a good entry level practice, small, tidy and modern fit out, well equipped, with a good location and loyal, friendly patients. Priced very attractively, including stock. For more details contact Sean Roffey on 0408 882 111.

TWO:  Looking for your own practice in Sydney? Don’t pass up this opportunity! A long established practice in South-Western Sydney is looking for a new owner to lift it up and take it to new heights. This could be the opportunity you have been waiting for! For details click here.

THREE:  Make a tree change to majestic Mildura, in the heart of Murray River country! This fantastic business opportunity consists of two practices in close proximity offering the ultimate in life style coupled with professional satisfaction and very good income. Servicing the regional city of Mildura and surrounding communities, the full scope optometry practices are family orientated businesses which have been built on long term patient relationships and a vision for patient care supremacy. Working With Children & Working With Older People Checks

In NSW, any optometrist who at any time may find themselves working unsupervised with a child MUST obtain a Working With Children Check. There would be very few optometrists who would be exempt from this requirement. To apply, click here.

In the ACT, registered health professionals are NOT required to have a separate check if their contact with children (or vulnerable people) is in the course of their normal professional activities – in our case, working as an optometrist. HOWEVER, if your contact is in some other capacity (say as a sports team coach) then despite the fact that you are a registered health professional, in that circumstance you must obtain a clearance. For further information, click here.

IMPORTANT – the Federal Government has requirements about police checks for people who work with the aged. The NSW Working With Children Check does include a police check, as does the ACT WWVP check.

Your Association - Our Support for You

Each month we bring you a short article about things that the Association is doing to support members.

A member contacted us after a patient had become aggressive both with the member and with an ophthalmologist to whom the patient had been referred. The optometrist wanted to know whether or not he could "divorce" the patient and if so, how to go about it.

We talked the member through their options and provided a letter which the optometrist could use to formally sever the optom-patient relationship.

Interestingly, the ophthalmologist – who wanted to do the same thing – was unable to get appropriate guidance from his College and so ended up utilising our advice as well!

The Association is here solely to safeguard and enhance your interests. We have extensive experience and knowledge, backed by specialist professional resources. That’s why you belong!

Visiting Optometrists Scheme

The Visiting Optometrists Scheme is seeking expressions of interest from optometrists who may be interested in providing services to some of their outreach centres. For further information, click here.
