University of Melbourne optometry students Nuwan De Silva and Kyra Stretton
By Patrick Hutchens
Doctor of Optometry students at the University of Melbourne, Kyra Stretton and Nuwan DeSilva, saved thousands of dollars for their third-year optometry class by placing a bulk order through Optometry Australia’s bookshop.
The Optometry Australia bookshop offers student discounts on bulk purchases for orders of more than 10 units of the same title.
Kyra and Nuwan fielded interest from their classmates about placing an order when one of their lecturers recommended they each get a set of the Wills Eye Institute series of books.
‘We have a Facebook group with all of our class in it so I just wrote a post asking for anyone who was interested to “like” the post,’ Kyra said.
Kyra and Nuwan ordered 34 copies of the seven volume set of Color Atlas and Synopsis of Clinical Ophthalmology and 20 copies of Wills Eye Manual.
In total, they spent $13,259 dollars. Had the students ordered those titles individually, they would have spent $17,029 so they saved about 22 per cent of the recommended retail price.
Student discounts for bulk orders are not set at a fixed percentage but vary for each title. To qualify for a bulk order, students need to make payment at the time of ordering.
