Membership categories and fees

All fees include GST. Approximately 30% lower than before unification for most categories. Monthly instalments are available.

↳ Recent Graduate

$900Up to 12 months following Immediate Graduate membership.

↳ Minimal Practice

$900Up to 4 hrs/week within scope of optometry (averaged over 12 months).

↳ Academic

$900Full-time researcher or educator, no more than 4 hrs clinical care/week.

Career Break

$400A complete break from the optometry industry, in line with Career Break guidelines.

Student

Oral therapeutics update

In late 2025, the Optometry Board of Australia consulted on proposed changes to the Registration Standard: Endorsement for Scheduled Medicines and associated guidelines that would enable endorsed optometrists to prescribe oral medicines for eye conditions, in addition to topical medicines. Optometry Australia through its advocacy, generated a high volume of submissions that are currently being reviewed by the Board to develop its recommendation to Health Ministers.

Tasmanian Budget focuses on prevention and primary care but eye health missing

The 2026–27 Tasmanian Budget delivers a strong focus on fiscal restraint, preventive health and community-based care, but contains no direct investment in eye health, optometry or blindness prevention. While eye health was not specifically referenced in the Budget Papers, several priorities align closely with Optometry Australia advocacy agenda.
