Giving every child the vision to learn, grow and thrive

Every child deserves the best possible start in life, and that starts with clear vision.

Good vision is essential for learning, confidence, and development. Yet in South Australia, many children begin school with undiagnosed vision problems that can affect their education and wellbeing.

Research from Flinders University found that 17% of Year 3 children failed a vision screening due to previously undiagnosed eye conditions, such as amblyopia and refractive error; conditions that can be treated effectively if detected early.

Despite strong evidence and successful programs interstate, South Australia falls behind without universal pre-school vision screening. This is our opportunity to change that.

What we’re calling for

Along with leading local eye health professionals and organisations in South Australia, Optometry Australia is calling on the South Australian Government to commit to implementing a universal pre-school vision screening program ahead of the 2026 state election.

The proposed program would:

  • Offer free, school-based vision screening for every four-year-old in South Australia.
  • Detect potential vision problems early, when treatment is most effective.
  • Ensure equitable access to screening for children across metro, regional, rural and Aboriginal communities.
  • Build on existing health and education infrastructure within SA Health, and community optometrists and ophthalmologists.

At an estimated cost of $1.1 million per year, this program represents outstanding value for money, a small investment to secure lifelong benefits for thousands of South Australian children.

Why it matters

Early detection of vision issues prevents avoidable vision loss, supports children’s learning, and reduces long-term healthcare costs. Conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) are only treatable if detected early, and if not treated lead to permanent vision loss. States like New South Wales and Western Australia already achieve near-universal coverage, proving that large scale screening is both achievable and effective.

By investing in universal screening, South Australia can ensure no child falls behind simply because they couldn’t see clearly.
