Mark Nevin has commenced as Chief Executive Officer of Optometry Australia, bringing experience in health sector leadership and member organisations.
A former practising optometrist in the UK and Ireland, Mr Nevin later retrained in economics, policy and strategy and has spent most of his career working alongside health professionals, advocating on their behalf and supporting them through complex system reform, digital transformation and day-to-day practice.
‘While I’m new to Optometry Australia, the profession itself is familiar territory, and it’s good to be back in the wonderful sector I began my career in,’ he said.
In his first weeks, Mr Nevin is meeting with members, staff and colleagues across the sector. He outlined his priorities for the role: advocating for eye health and a sustainable sector, removing barriers for members and supporting optometrists to have fulfilling careers.
‘Our role is to deliver for members. That means being transparent about what we’re doing and why, as we work together,’ he said.
Mr Nevin is closely involved in ongoing discussions about proposed structural reform across the federation, confirming he has been meeting regularly with the State Divisions and will keep members updated as the work progresses.
‘What matters most is that we build an organisation that delivers high value services for members, with member engagement at its core,’ he noted.
‘This is a pivotal time for the future of our profession and something we must shape together.’
