Optometry NSW/ACT has appointed Thomas Ford as its new President.
Based in Griffith, New South Wales, Tom is a regional optometrist with a deep passion for advancing the profession’s future, while being a strong advocate for the clinical education of his peers.
“I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to serve our members, and I am committed to bolstering our profession for future generations,” Tom said.
Tom regularly contributes to professional development across the sector, having recently presented at the Canberra Conference on ocular therapeutics, and is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.
His honours include the RDWA Rural Health Award and MPHN Innovation in Allied Health Award, in recognition of outstanding patient care and clinical excellence.
As an early career optometrist, Tom brings a perspective closely aligned with the Association’s membership, alongside a clear commitment to supporting colleagues in clinical practice and professional growth.
His appointment comes at a time of ongoing change for the Association, with a continued focus on delivering value for members and strengthening engagement across the profession.
“Looking forward, I’m excited to both strengthen and modernise our governance structures, support an agile and strategically focused peak body, champion an expanded and contemporary scope of practice, while amplifying the voice of our members,” he noted.
“As a profession, we find ourselves at a critical juncture; one that requires strong advocacy, contemporary and forward-thinking leadership, and a commitment to shaping a sustainable, future-ready profession.”
Tom succeeds Mark Koszek, who stepped down from the role to focus on opening his optometry practice in Sydney’s Sylvania Waters.
“I wish to acknowledge the service and contributions of my predecessor, Mark Koszek, who along with our Board, has ensured a more robust organisation which we can continue to build upon. Together, we are committed to ensuring an organisation that is unashamedly member-centric, while embracing the diversity and experience which exists within our profession.”
Optometry NSW/ACT looks forward to working with Tom in his new capacity as President.
Optometry Australia would like to extend congratulations to both Tom on his appointment as ONSW/ACT President, and to Mark on his new endeavour.
