Optometry Victoria South Australia (OV/SA) is thrilled to announce that Richard Lindsay is the recipient of its prestigious Life Membership honour. Life members are recognised for their meritorious contribution of long and distinguished service to the profession of optometry, and Richard’s career exemplifies this dedication.

Upon receiving his Life Membership, Richard reflected, ‘I am deeply honoured, as I genuinely love optometry and consider myself lucky to be working in this wonderful profession. The nature of my work is incredibly gratifying, especially having the opportunity to see and help such a diverse range of patients.’

Recognised nationally and internationally for his exceptional technical expertise, particularly in managing complex corneal conditions with contact lenses, Richard has relentlessly pursued the highest standards of eye care since graduating in 1984. He has been a member or affiliate of scores of national and international organisations, including diplomate of the Cornea and Contact Lens Section of the American Academy of Optometry.

Richard has been a pioneer of contact lens innovation in Australia, establishing Richard Lindsay & Associates in 1996 as a dedicated hub for specialty lens fitting. His practice set a new standard by prioritising advanced imaging and corneal assessment before such technologies were commonplace. Patients consistently describe Richard as meticulous, generous, and genuinely invested in their wellbeing, a passion he continues to demonstrate even after transferring practice ownership in 2023. Richard’s collaboration with A/Prof Grant Snibson provided the patient cohort for corneal cross-linking studies, directly contributing to the development of current referral guidelines.

Richard’s intellectual contribution is equally profound, having served as Head of Contact Lens Clinics at the Victorian College of Optometry and as a Senior Fellow at The University of Melbourne. In 2012, Richard co-authored the book A user’s manual for people with keratoconus and has contributed 13 book chapters, primarily on the subject of lens design and fitting. He has delivered over 110 lectures and published nearly 50 papers, mentoring many of today’s advanced contact lens fitters.
Richard volunteers his time for pro bono fittings and community groups, which has included organisations such Sight For All Optometry and Contact Lens Training Project in Vietnam and Cambodia. He generously provides case support to peers across the country, strengthening collaborative care with ophthalmologists. His advocacy as a Past-President and Founding Fellow of the Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia has championed specialty fitting as an essential subspecialty of primary eye care.

Richard’s deep knowledge, humility and deep empathy ensure he remains an optometrist with universal respect. We congratulate Richard on becoming a Life Member of OV/SA and thank him for his extraordinary contribution to optometry.
