Optometry Australia will host The Lowdown on Low Vision, a free live streaming seminar on 19 April, focused on low vision assessments and the latest vision aids.

The presenters are optometrist and low vision consultant Paul Graveson, and Jaci Armstrong, the principal policy adviser at Guide Dogs Australia. They will be joined by a patient with low vision who will discuss how reduced visual acuity has impacted his life.

The webcast will stream at 7.00 pm AEST and will be hosted by national clinical policy adviser and optometrist Simon Hanna. There are 4.5 CPD points available for attending this event and successfully completing assessment.

Mr Hanna says that getting a first-hand account from a patient with low vision will be a valuable experience for many optometrists.

‘The main benefit of hearing from a speaker with low vision is that it will give optometrists who don’t do a lot of this work an insight into the challenges that a low vision person faces and the things that impact their lifestyle and mobility,’ Mr Hanna said.

‘We’re looking at putting the emphasis on what you should be considering when you conduct an assessment of a low vision patient and which extra tests you conduct during the examination.

‘As many optometrists are not regularly involved in low vision work, they may not be operating at their highest level of proficiency in this area, so it’s good to hear from Paul Graveson who has this expertise and can go through an assessment of a low vision patient in more detail.

‘Jaci Armstrong will focus on patient resources and support, including a discussion of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and resources that Guide Dogs Australia provides. Jaci also suffers from low vision and has a guide dog, so she’ll be bringing her own perspective as well,’ he said.
