Learning Objectives

  • • Optometrists will be able to recognize patient complaints and be able to explain and deal with these issues in their practice.
  • • A knowledge of evidence-based recommendations for managing cataract patients including:
  • • Timing of and indications for surgery
  • • Considerations in one-eyed patients
  • • Bilateral simultaneous cataract surgery
  • • Choice of intraocular lens
  • • Management of complications of cataract surgery
  • • Enable a greater understanding of the surgical technique of Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery using the LenSx laser platform
  • • Examine the patient and surgical benefits of using the LenSx laser for our patients
  • • Gain an understanding of the evidence base for the clinical and safety advantages of using the LenSx laser for cataract surgery
  • • Evaluate latest evidence of FLACS vs conventional phaco
  • • Introduce Akahoshi Karate Prechop instrument and technique as a cost effective and safe alternative to PACS
  • • Demonstrate the use of the Akahoshi Supercombo Prechopper
