Learning Objectives

  • 1. To understand when to refer a patient for cataract surgery and the decision making process when a recommendation is made to proceed to surgery. 2. To understand the impact on patients of delaying cataract surgery.
  • 3. To understand the signs and symptoms of retinal complications to look for after cataract surgery and the factors predisposing a patient to retinal complications prior to cataract surgery. 4. To have an overview of the treatment paradigm, therapeutic, medical and surgical, used to address retinal complications arising from cataract surgery.
  • 5. To understand the different IOLs available for use in cataract surgery. 6. To gain an understanding of how IOLs are chosen for patients undergoing cataract surgery and the impact of these choices on visual outcomes.
