Learning Objectives

  • 1.1 1.Understand the basic principles underlying the development of amblyopia and strabismus in order to ensure early detection and management and be able to communicate treatment plans to patient 2. Understand demographics and epidemiology of amblyopia and strabismus. 3 Understand that previous surgery is not a barrier to treatment
  • 1.2 1. Understand the chronology of development of problems 2.Understand the importance of demographics 3.Understand the role of epidemiology.
  • 1.3. 1. Understand how and why amblyopia and strabismus develop 2. Understand how strabismus and amblyopia are functionally related 3. Understand how the development of amblyopia or strabismus can be beneficial to the person at a specified point in time but not forever
  • 1.4 1. Learn how specific disruptions or "thwarting" experiences occurring at critical times in normal infant development 2. Understand how this can result in strabismus or amblyopia 3. Understand how differences in patients can affect treatment plans
  • 2.1.1. Strabismus viewed as altered binocularity rather than a monocular condition 2. Strabismus and amblyopia can be treated past the traditionally viewed “critical” period 3. Understand occlusion success rates for various subtypes of amblyopia & the long-term success of occlusion
  • 2.2 1. Understand the development and management of esotropia in children 2. Understand issues in respect to accommodation 3 Accommodative convergent squints and partially convergent squints and their management.
  • 2.3. 1 Understand the use of photorefractive techniques and video refraction including the sensitivity and specificity and how this compares with cycloplegic refraction results 2. Be aware of the results of the Cambridge infant vision screening programme 3. Understand the results of two infant vision screening programmes: prediction and prevention of strabismus and amblyopia from photo- and video refractive screening
  • 2.4.1. Understand the significance and accuracy of using video refractive techniques 2. Understand the drawbacks of these techniques 3. Predicting patients with amblyopia and strabismus in hyperopic patients
  • 3.1.1 Understand Ophthalmology literature on cycloplegia and emmetropisation 2. Understand Ophthalmology literature on method of reducing plus while maintaining binocularity 3. Understand Ophthalmology literature on reduced lens prescribing
  • 3.2.1 Understand Duane’s syndrome 2. Understand Vertical deviations 3. Understand Treatment of Vertical
  • 3.3.1 Understand Binocular Testing with Keystone Basic Binocular Test 2. Understand Suppression Testing 3. Understand Fixation Disparity Assessment & Analysis of Findings
  • 3.4 Understand VO Stars Techniques 2. Understand Meyes Flying Rings, Alternate Wink and Lustre 3. Understand Greenwald Eye Movements
  • 4.1.1 Understand Visual acuity assessment – preferential looking, OKN drums. Understand Illiterate charts 2. Understand Projector vs chart, logMAR vs Snellen. Understand modification with pinhole, 2 x telescope, ND filters 3. Understand VEP/VER’s. Understand Macula integrity testing, and cyclo deviation assessment
  • 4.2.1 Understand Anticrowding techniques 2. Understand Disassociation techniques 3. Understand Transparency techniques 4. CAM therapy 5. Auditory Biofeedback
  • 4.3.1. Understand Nystagmus therapy 2. Understand critical periods 3. Understand Longterm occlusion outcomes
