“Person-centred care is widely recognised as a foundation to safe, high-quality health care. It is care that respects and responds to the preferences, needs and values of patients.”

– Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care

Optometry Australia is developing a series of self-paced online modules on caring for diverse populations.

These courses are part of our ongoing commitment to support the continuing professional development of members to provide patient-centered and effective care, in line with the Ahpra Shared Code of conduct

The quality assured modules will be released in stages, with the first module introduced in November 2024. The Care for Diverse Populations education program topics will include:

  • Migrants and refugees
  • Working with interpreters
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Trauma informed care
  • People living with disability
  • LGBTQI+ community
  • Neurodivergence

If one or more of these areas is particularly of interest to you and you would like to support the development of the content, please email c.ly@optometry.org.au with your expression of interest and a short summary of your experience working with the population(s).

Acknowledgement of Country

In the spirit of reconciliation Optometry Australia acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
