Optometry Australia has released its latest position statement on the integration and regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in optometry, outlining a series of recommendations aimed at guiding the informed adoption and regulation of AI technologies in eye care across the country. In a timely development, Ahpra and the National Boards have also released guidance regarding the implementation of AI by health practitioners.

AI in Optometry Position Statement

Recognising the transformative potential of AI, Optometry Australia emphasises that while AI offers significant opportunities to enhance patient care and optimise optometric practices, its implementation must be approached with caution to safeguard patient safety and uphold ethical standards.

Key Points from the position statement

Support for AI innovation

Optometry Australia welcomes AI-driven innovations that can improve patient outcomes and benefit the broader community.

However, the organisation stresses that AI should complement, not replace, the clinical judgment and expertise of optometrists and underscores the risks associated with AI systems.

Ethical framework and regulation

Optometry Australia calls for the development of a robust ethical framework specific to AI in eye care, aligning with broader healthcare regulations.

The position statement advocates for clear guidelines and legislation, supporting the recommendations made by the Australian Alliance for AI in Healthcare (AAAiH).

Similarly to Ahpra’s recommendations, these include ensuring that AI applications used in patient care comply with Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulations. Optometry Australia advocates that practitioners prioritise patient safety, accuracy and efficacy when employing artificial intelligence.

Professional development and education

As AI continues to evolve, Optometry Australia highlights the importance of ongoing professional development for optometrists.

The organisation commits to working with regulators, developers and other stakeholders to provide continuing education on the responsible use of AI in clinical practice.

This will help practitioners stay informed about the latest advancements and ensure the safe integration of AI into their workflows.

Risks and responsibilities

The position statement identifies several risks associated with AI in optometry, including the potential deskilling of practitioners, legal uncertainties and the reinforcement of existing biases.

Optometry Australia stresses that AI should never undermine the clinical independence of optometrists and practitioners must be equipped with the knowledge to critically assess AI-generated data.

Access and equity

While AI has the potential to improve access to eye care for disadvantaged communities, Optometry Australia warns against the inequitable distribution of AI technologies, which could widen existing gaps in healthcare access.

The organisation advocates for the equitable integration of AI into eye care models to ensure all Australians benefit from these advancements.

Looking ahead

Optometry Australia is committed to leading the profession through the evolving landscape of AI in healthcare.

The organisation’s position statement serves as a guiding document for optometrists, policymakers and AI developers, ensuring that the integration of AI into eye care is conducted in a manner that prioritises patient safety, ethical practice and professional integrity.
