Optometry Australia is inviting all members involved in the Visiting Optometrists Scheme (VOS) to take part in a national survey to help shape the future of this vital program.
The VOS plays a critical role in improving access to eye care for Australians living in rural and remote communities, as well as for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through the scheme, optometrists are supported to provide outreach services in locations that would otherwise face significant barriers to timely and culturally safe eye care.
The VOS moves into a new funding period from 1 July 2026 and we have received confirmation from the Australian Government that it is open to considering recommendations to amend the Service Delivery Standards which underpin the program. It is essential that optometrists’ voices inform these conversations and we are therefore seeking member feedback on whether the VOS is operating effectively and sustainably – including whether current funding arrangements, administrative processes and support structures are fit for purpose.
Whether you deliver services directly, work under a subcontract, or are involved in managing VOS contracts – your experience matters.
Share your perspective by completing the survey here.
The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete and will remain open until Sunday, 17 August 2025. Responses will directly inform Optometry Australia’s policy and advocacy efforts, including our engagement with the Federal Government and jurisdictional fundholders.
For more information or to provide feedback outside the survey, please contact policy@optometry.org.au.
