Optometry Australia is excited to announce a new initiative aimed at supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander optometrists and optometry students. This program will provide financial assistance for four (4) individuals to attend the Indigenous Allied Health Australia (IAHA) 2024 National Conference, and can be accessed to cover costs for registration, travel, and accommodation.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a long history in promoting health and wellbeing and providing healthcare and this new program underscores Optometry Australia’s commitment to enhancing the representation and participation of First Nations peoples in the optometry field. By attending the IAHA National Conference, delegates will have the opportunity to experience networking opportunities with peers within a culturally diverse and safe space, opportunities for growth, learning and healing and professional development that challenges them both personally and professionally.
Sarah Davies, Director of Optometry Advancement at Optometry Australia, emphasised the importance of this initiative: ‘We are dedicated to supporting the growth of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander optometry workforce and this initiative is a step towards ensuring connection, and promoting leadership within the community.’
How to apply
Optometry Australia encourages interested members to apply by providing:
- A 100-150 word statement on their reasons for wanting to attend the conference.
- A brief outline of the support required (for example, registration only, or inclusive of travel and accommodation).
Applications should be submitted to policy@optometry.org.au by Friday, 12 July 2024.
This initiative is part of Optometry Australia’s broader efforts to support the optometry profession in delivering accessible, culturally appropriate care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, as per our 2024-2027 Strategic Plan.
