Activity Outline

Dry eye disease is a common yet complex condition that sits at the intersection of ocular surface health, systemic disease, and medication use. This interactive session reframes dry eye as a practical clinical challenge of identification, risk stratification, and therapeutic escalation, grounded in key updates from DEWS III.

The presentation will explore how systemic conditions and oral medications influence dry eye presentation and progression, highlighting red flags and considerations relevant to everyday optometric practice. Using a case-based approach, attendees will be guided through decision-making pathways that support confident escalation of management, including when to adjust topical therapy, consider oral treatments, or co-manage with other health professionals. The focus is on translating guidelines and evidence into clear, clinically applicable strategies that can be implemented immediately in practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify key updates from DEWS III that are most relevant to everyday clinical decision-making in dry eye disease
  • Recognise systemic conditions and oral medications that may contribute to or exacerbate dry eye symptoms
  • Apply a structured approach to risk stratification and therapeutic escalation in the management of dry eye disease
