Activity Outline

Moreton Eye Group is presenting a masterclass 2026 for Optometrists. The event is shaping up to be an engaging and educational experience, with plans for a mix of seminar sessions and hands-on workshops. The highlight of the event will be Intravitreal Injection Wet Lab workshop. It will also be including a range of interactive and therapeutic presentations on infective keratitis, ocular surface neoplasia, retina case discussions, geographic atrophy management, management of suspicious lid diseases, management of post cataract surgery complications and ocular surface disorders such as recurrent erosion syndrome.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the indications, contraindications, required instruments, aseptic techniques, and step-by-step procedure for administering intravitreal injections safely.
  • Identify early and late complications (e.g., endophthalmitis, retinal detachment, increased intraocular pressure) and outline appropriate management and referral pathways.
  • Accurately analyze OCT scans to identify key features of conditions such as macular edema secondary to diabetes, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions.
  • Correlate OCT results with clinical findings to guide diagnosis, monitor disease progression, and determine when intravitreal injection therapy or referral is indicated.
  • Understand the key timeline of the occurrence of common post cataract surgery complications
  • Acurately differentiate among endophthalmitis, TASS and persistent ocular inflammation following a cataract surgery
  • Therapeutically manage common post-cataract surgery complications and appropriate referral pathways
  • Identify preoperative slit-lamp and historical features that predict complex cataract surgery and ocular surface instability.
  • Recognise corneal, zonular, biometric, and infectious risk factors that increase complication rates and compromise outcomes.
  • Differentiate routine cataract referrals from high-risk anterior segment and infectious keratitis cases requiring urgent or specialist care.
  • Recognise key clinical patterns of infectious keratitis, including: (a) Viral keratitis (HSV, HZV, adenovirus) (b) Contact lens–associated microbial keratitis (c) Blepharitis-related marginal keratitis
  • Understand how surgical timing and planning must be modified in the presence of active or prior corneal disease.
  • Apply a structured referral and triage checklist to improve patient safety, surgical outcomes, and prevent vision-threatening delays.
  • Learn diagnosis and etiology of recurrent corneal erosion syndrome
  • Apply therapeutic management for recurrent corneal erosion syndrome and understand the appropriate referral pathways
  • Evaluate current & emerging treatments for Dry & Wet AMD
  • Understand Syfovre (pegcetacoplan) and other intravitreal protocols
  • Counsel patients on expectations, side effects, and treatment burden
  • Co-manage patients effectively with ophthalmologists
  • Identify key features of common benign and malignant eyelid lesions and differentiate suspicious lesions requiring referral
  • Recognise red flags for periocular malignancy
  • Understand management options including biopsy and surgical approaches

Max CPD hours awarded: 5.5
