Activity Outline

Welcome to the Academy of Advanced Ophthalmic Optics Continuing Professional Development program. We aim to develop the theoretical and practical skills of ophthalmic professionals to elevate our industry in Australia and abroad.

This Program will be delivered via online learning. 14.25 hours of engagement is expected without assessment or 20.25 hours including assessment. Moderators will be Thao Hannaford (optometrist) and Grant Hannaford (physicist/optical dispenser). Key topics are outlined in the table below and an understanding of ophthalmic optics will allow optometrists to effectively manage their patient's ophthalmic needs.

Learning Objectives

  • Ophthalmic optics: On completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 1. Understand the principles of ophthalmic optics and how this will affect the performance of a lens 2. Learn how to calculate these principles to minimise adverse performance of a lens on a patient's visual performance 3. Able to demonstrate they can use ophthalmic optics to troubleshoot and solve cases where a lens performance has failed for a patient
  • Prism: On completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 1. Recognise how prism can be used in practice 2. Understand the considerations required to successfully prescribed prism 3. Able to demonstrate they can troubleshoot prism cases and solve cases where a lens performance has failed for a patient
  • Aspheric lenses: On completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 1. Understand what an aspheric lens is and how to calculate its properties 2. Demonstrate the best practice method for fitting aspheric lenses for patients 3. Able to demonstrate they can troubleshoot and solve cases where an aspheric lens performance has failed for a patient
  • Predicting lens performance: On completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 1. Understand the various types of lenses available and how to calculate its properties 2. Select the appropriate lens designs according to the patient's needs 3. Able to demonstrate they can troubleshoot and solve cases where a lens performance has failed for a patient
  • Advanced lens and PPL selection: On completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 1. Understand the differences between PAL designs and occupational lenses 2. Select the appropriate lens design according to the patient's needs 3. Able to demonstrate they can troubleshoot and solve cases where a PAL or occupational lens performance has failed for a patient
  • Measurements and measurement technologies: 1. Understand the principles of accuracy and precision in a clinical optometric setting 2. Understand how to utilise measurement systems to benefit the patient’s visual outcomes 3. Learn how to position your practice with measurement technologies
  • Measurement compensations: On completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 1. Understand the lens compensations required and how to calculate them to optimise visual performance 2. Understand the frame compensations required and how to calculate them to optimise visual performance 3. Able to demonstrate they can troubleshoot and solve cases where measurement compensations have not been made and the performance of a lens has failed for a patient
  • The future-biometry in practice: On completion of this activity, participants should be able to 1. Understand the advancements and research coming out in ophthalmic optics 2. Understand the boundary condition for the applicability of biometry 3. Learn how ocular biometry can be utilised in practice
