Activity Outline

Macular Disease Foundation Australia with the support of the Commonwealth Government is providing free education modules for optometrists. The courses are aimed to increase awareness and knowledge of macular disease to enable early diagnosis and interventions. There are two 1-hour courses available. Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Eye Disease.

The Age Related Macular Degeneration course aims to assist you to manage and reduce modifiable risk and improve your communication with patients about macular disease and it's impacts. You will learn about linking patients diagnosed with macular disease with appropriate supports and services, and current best practice and strategies to recognise and encourage high risk individuals to have regular eye examinations.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the current and future prevalence rates of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Australia
  • Describe the impact of AMD on patients and the health system
  • Differentially diagnose and discuss the stages of AMD
  • Describe treatment options for various stages of AMD
  • Describe risk factors for the development and progression of AMD, including diet and lifestyle changes
  • Discuss tailored AMD risk factor information with patients in a sensitive and culturally aware manner
  • Recommend eye examinations and identify effective referral pathways for people living with or at risk of AMD in line with national guidelines
  • Describe the role of various health professionals and patient support services in the management of people living with or at risk of AMD
