Learning Objectives

  • Assess patient suitability for cataract surgery by interpreting clinical findings, visual needs, and comorbidities.
  • Identify and manage risk factors that may impact surgical outcomes (e.g., dense cataracts, pseudoexfoliation, prior ocular surgery).
  • Recognize common intraoperative and postoperative complications and outline appropriate management strategies.
  • Evaluate postoperative outcomes and determine when referral or co-management is required.
  • Reflect on case outcomes to improve clinical reasoning and future decision-making.
  • Describe the pathophysiology and progression of Geographic Atrophy in the context of advanced age-related macular degeneration.
  • Identify clinical and imaging features of GA using OCT, fundus autofluorescence, and visual function assessment.
  • Explain the mechanisms of action of emerging therapies and compare currently approved and investigational treatments, including indications, efficacy, and limitations.
  • Evaluate patient suitability for treatment based on lesion characteristics, disease stage, and individual risk factors.
  • Recognize potential adverse effects and monitoring requirements associated with new therapies.
  • Describe the indications for glaucoma surgery, including medical and laser therapy.
  • Differentiate between common surgical procedures, including trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage devices, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).
  • Differentiate between urgent and non-urgent retinal pathologies, including retinal detachment, macular holes, and diabetic retinopathy.
  • Apply clinical reasoning to real-world vitreo-retinal case scenarios to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient care.
