Learning Objectives

  • Optometrists will be able to recognize patient complaints and be able to explain and deal with these issues in their practice.
  • A knowledge of evidence-based recommendations for managing cataract patients including: Timing of and indications for surgery Considerations in one-eyed patients Bilateral simultaneous cataract surgery Choice of intraocular lens
  • Management of complications of cataract surgery
  • Enable a greater understanding of the surgical technique of Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery using the LenSx laser platform
  • Examine the patient and surgical benefits of using the LenSx laser for our patients
  • Gain an understanding of the evidence base for the clinical and safety advantages of using the LenSx laser for cataract surgery
  • Evaluate latest evidence of FLACS vs conventional phaco
  • Introduce Akahoshi Karate Prechop instrument and technique as a cost effective and safe alternative to PACS
  • Demonstrate the use of the Akahoshi Supercombo Prechopper
