Learning Objectives

  • Be updated of the latest in diabetic retinopathy, including results from the DRCR.Net Protocol S and T studies
  • Understand the scientific and functional basis of advancements in technology associated with cataract surgery.
  • Learn to recognise common periocular lessions
  • Identify simple and more complex oculoplastic presentations
  • Gain an understanding of the common clinical course for an oculoplastic patient
  • Understand different types of Retinal Detachment and their management
  • Understand the difference between a pinguecula, a pterygium, and a suspicious lesion of the ocular surface.
  • Identify which lesions of the ocular surface require referral to an ophthalmologist, and in what time-frame.
  • Understand the indications for surgical excision of a pterygium.
  • Be familiar with non-surgical strategies for protecting the ocular surface, and managing symptomatic pingueculae and pterygia, including use of lubricants and topical corticosteroids.
  • Be aware of squamous neoplastic lesions of the ocular surface (OSSN) and how they should be treated.
  • Understand various causes of raised eye pressure in patients with uveitis.
  • Appreciate latest treatment options for diabetic macular oedema
  • Understand the different types of MIGS devices and how they work
  • Be aware of the complications that are associated with each device
  • Be able to identify patients that would benefit from MIGS implantation
  • Be provided with an up-to-date overview of the management of diabetic retinopathy, including individual examples of each type of treatment
  • Confidently diagnose and differentiate vitreomacular traction vs adhesion
  • Understand surgical and non-surgical management of VMT & macular hole
  • Understand different causes of vitreous opacity and surgical and non-surgical management options.
  • Be informed and educated about common conditions seen by Optometrists.
