Activity Outline

Artificial intelligence is poised to change the way many of us work in the future. As Optometrists, it is important we establish a way to leverage AI to improve diagnosis, patient care and clinical efficiencies. This presentation will look at some diagnostic AI technologies currently available and under development. Break out rooms will offer you a chance to work with your colleagues to dissect challenging cases of ocular disease while developing an understanding of how AI can be beneficial in diagnosis. At the same time, you will also develop an awareness of situations where AI may not be diagnostically accurate and understand why this may occur. This presentation will not only challenge you, it will stimulate critical thinking and analysis and hopefully make you excited for the future of ocular disease diagnosis.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how the development of large language models to aide diagnosis of ocular disease may impact the future of optometric examinations
  • Compare and contrast the diagnosis formulated by you and your peers with that generated by AI and understand why differences may arise
  • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of AI-driven ocular disease diagnosis
