Activity Outline
There are all sorts of low vision aids available nowadays, both high and low-tech, well beyond the simple magnifier. Which are the most useful? In this presentation Paul Graveson will discuss which LVAs he recommends most frequently and why.
The presentation will be followed by an interactive session in which small groups will consider what they might recommend for a given example patient, assisted by Paul, Luke Burns and Elise Wilson (the other optometrists at the RHH Lions Low Vision Clinic).
Time permitting, you will then have the opportunity to ask all three optometrists your general low vision questions.
Afterwards, we welcome you to take the opportunity to connect with peers and catch up with Mark Nevin, Optometry Australia's CEO.
Learning Objectives
- Understand several different presentations of patients with low vision from macular degeneration.
- Understand why certain low vision aids are likely to be more suitable than others for these different types.
- Have experience in using a rehabilitation mindset in dealing with such patients.

| Paul Graveson
Catch up with Mark: |
Paul graduated from the University of Auckland in 1991. He has worked in the Royal Hobart Hospital’s Low Vision Clinic since 2000. Paul has presented low vision lectures at several Tasmania state congresses and the Vision 2014 World Low Vision Congress, and is the author of the ‘Understanding Low Vision’ website, an educational resource designed for both optometrists and the general public. Aside from his low vision work, he runs Hobart Optometry, a small practice that brings optometric care into local nursing homes. |
