Activity Outline

Dr Sky Chew will present an overview of retinal detachment and the options for repair, including a surgical video. Practical triage guide: how urgent is urgent across common retinal presentations such as, but not limited to vitreous hemorrhage, CRAO, CRVO and neovascular AMD. Following the presentation, Optometry Australia's Professor Nicola Anstice will provide an update on Optometry Australia's workforce projections and workplace conditions studies.

  • Discuss the urgency of referral for common retinal conditions in optometric practice

Meet the speakers

 


Dr Sky Chew

Dr Sky Chew is a quadruple-fellowed Ophthalmologist, with subspecialist skills in vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina and complex cataracts. Having also done fellowships in Paediatric Ophthalmology and uveitis, he is comfortable managing all forms of general ophthalmology conditions as well. Most importantly, he does enjoy teaching optometrist colleagues, and welcomes any questions!


Professor Nicola Anstice
Professor Nicola Anstice is an optometrist, clinician scientist, and educator with a passion for advancing equitable access to eye care. She is currently Director of Research & Education at Optometry Australia, where she leads national research strategy, continuing professional development initiatives, and advocacy for the optometry workforce. She also holds an academic role as a Professor in Optometry at Flinders University, where she is committed to student-centred teaching and mentoring the next generation of eye health professionals. Her research interests span visual development, refractive error, and culturally safe approaches to eye health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Māori communities. She has been recognised as a finalist in the Women in Innovation Awards for her leadership and impact across the sector. Nicola is dedicated to bridging clinical practice, education, and policy to ensure high-quality, accessible eye care for all Australians
