Activity Outline
This wet lab educational event will provide an excellent opportunity for hands-on learning. There are four interactive stations, each designed to facilitate practical skills development.
Dr Catriona Downie will present on endoscopic DCR and the watery eye.
Dr Tanya Karaconji will discuss glaucoma, and the different types of MIGS devices and patient selection and techniques in device insertion as well as efficacy of the devices.
Dr Derek Chan will discuss the phaco machine and the operating microscope in cataract surgery.
Dr Gaurav Bhardwaj's talk will be on vitreoretinal surgery.
Learning Objectives
- Understand endoscopic DCR
- Rationale for endoscopic vs external approach
- Discuss the role of canalicular stents
- Explore the different types of MIGS devices in glaucoma surgery
- Understand patient selection and techniques in device insertion
- Look at the efficacy of different devices
- Identify and describe the function of the three standard pars plana ports (Infusion, Endoillumination, and Instrumentation) and explain why specific placement (3.5mm vs. 4.0mm) is critical for lens safety.
- Differentiate between various intraocular tamponades (Air, SF6, C3F8, and Silicone Oil) based on their physical properties and expected clinical appearance during a slit-lamp examination
- Explain the mechanics of the vitreous cutter (Duty cycle and cut rate) to understand how "shaving the vitreous base" relates to the risk of iatrogenic retinal tears and post-operative peripheral checks.
- Develop an understanding of the steps in getting ready for cataract surgery
- Understand the phaco machine in cataract surgery
- Appreciate the role of the operating microscope
