Activity Outline

Falls are a leading cause of injury hospitalisation and death in Australia. Poor vision, visual impairment, and ocular diseases have strong associations with increased falls risk. Hence, as primary eye care professionals, optometrists may be the first point of contact for older adults to discuss falls prevention management.

This CPD module aims to provide optometrists with a deeper understanding of how optometrists can incorporate falls prevention management into practice and to help community-dwelling older adults prevent falls.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the impact of falls on older adults in the community,
  • Understand the strong associations between age-related vision changes, ocular diseases and falls,
  • Understand key elements for embedding falls screening, assessment, treatment, and referral into optometric practice,
  • Realise the need to adapt glasses prescriptions and provide education for older adults with a history of falling, and
  • Identify relevant falls guidelines and resources specific for optometric practice.
