Activity Outline
The G3CP CPD event is a regular educational session hosted by the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH), designed for optometrists involved in our shared glaucoma care model. This session will focus on the diagnosis and management of angle closure glaucoma.
The first part of the session will introduce the classification of angle closure glaucoma, covering its various forms and presentations. It will also highlight key risk factors and populations at increased risk of angle closure. The session will outline the main mechanisms of angle closure and review diagnostic approaches used in clinical settings. Participants will be guided on recognising acute presentations and differentiating between suspects and confirmed cases.
The second part will focus on management strategies for both acute and chronic angle closure. This includes emergency intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering, laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI), the role of cataract surgery, and filtration surgery where appropriate. Long-term monitoring strategies and referral pathways within the shared care model will also be discussed.
The session will conclude with 2 interactive case discussions by glaucoma fellows and optometrists.
Learning Objectives
- Identify key anatomical and demographic risk factors that predispose individuals to angle closure
- Recognise and classify the clinical subtypes of angle-closure glaucoma, including PACS, PAC, PACG, and acute angle-closure crisis.
- Differentiate between angle-closure suspects and confirmed cases and understand appropriate escalation or referral pathways for occludable angle
- To understand treatment modalities for angle-closure glaucoma and the optometrist’s role in monitoring stable cases.
- To discuss shared care approaches in glaucoma management.
