Joins Drs Matthew Green, Esra Sanli, Travers Weaver and A/Prof Heather Russell on more information talks covering all aspects of Ophthalmology. Other guest speakers will also join our program for the day.

- Understand the clinical presentation of ptosis (levator dysfunction), dermatochalasis (excess eyelid skin), and brow ptosis (drooping eyebrows)
- Understand the anatomical differences and diagnostic tests (e.g., margin reflex distance, lid crease evaluation) used to distinguish between ptosis, dermatochalasis and brow ptosis and recognize the i
- Identify when functional eyelid surgery is needed based on visual field obstruction and patient symptoms
- Understand the referral criteria for oculoplastic evaluation in cases of ptosis, dermatochalasis, and brow ptosis
- Learn the appropriate use of visual field testing to document the functional impact of eyelid conditions
- Know the indications for cosmetic blepharoplasty and how it differs from functional eyelid surgeries
- Understand the patient counselling process for cosmetic vs. functional procedures
- Review the role of optometrists in postoperative care, including recognizing complications and assisting with patient follow-up
- Recognise the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to managing patients with eyelid disorders, including the optometrist’s role in identifying, referring, and co-managing cases with oculoplastic
- Discuss how optometrists can support patients in the preoperative and postoperative phases of care, ensuring optimal visual and aesthetic outcomes
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of common surgical retina emergencies, including retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage, and endophthalmitis
- Utilize appropriate diagnostic tools and techniques for effectively diagnosing retinal emergencies, including the role of history-taking, clinical examination, and imaging modalities
- Be aware of various surgical interventions available for retinal emergencies, including indications for vitrectomy and scleral buckle procedures
- Understand the urgency of different retinal emergencies and when to refer patients to a specialist for surgical intervention
- Critically evaluate a range of retinal cases, identifying key clinical features and challenges presented in each scenario
- Apply improved diagnostic reasoning by discussing differential diagnoses and appropriate investigative approaches for various retinal conditions
- Discuss and formulate management plans based on case presentations, considering both medical and surgical options
- Engage in group discussions, sharing insights and experiences to enhance collective understanding of complex retinal cases
- Integrate current guidelines and evidence into their discussions, fostering a deeper understanding of best practices in retinal care
- Assess vision accurately in children
- Gain confidence in diagnosing amblyopia as the cause of reduced vision in one or both eyes and managing the cause
- Know what to do next when there is no obvious cause on refraction and clinical examination ie: when and what ancillary tests to use
- Apply ‘tricks of the trade’ in testing vision for unilateral and bilateral reduced vision
- Be aware of red flags in reduced vision
- Understand the new treatment options available to improve vision for keratoconic patients
- Understand when to refer someone for keratoconus treatment
- Know when to refer for a corneal graft vs CAIRS
- Know when to refer for CXL combined with PTK
- Apply evidence-based practice to a series of keratoconic cases
