Activity Outline

This interactive evening CPD event will provide optometrists with the opportunity to observe and practise key ophthalmic techniques in a clinical theatre environment. Participants will engage directly with the ophthalmic surgical team through a combination of short lectures, live demonstrations, and hands-on wet lab stations.

The program is designed to enhance clinical understanding of common ophthalmic surgical procedures, improve referral and co-management decisions, and strengthen collaborative patient care between optometrists and ophthalmologists. CPD points will be awarded for attendance and active participation.

Topics Covered

1. Hands-on experience with glaucoma and MIGS surgery

2. Demonstration and discussion of cataract phacoemulsification techniques and technology

3. Ocular biometry and clinical factors used in the selection and power calculation of intraocular lenses for cataract surgery

4. Practical session on intravitreal injection techniques with animal eye models 

5. Removal of corneal and conjunctival foreign bodies using animal eye models

6. Recognition of post-operative infection, management and urgent referral indicators

Learning Objectives

• Understand the principles and techniques of cataract phacoemulsification surgery and modern surgical technology
• Describe contemporary glaucoma surgical techniques, including complex stent surgery, and their implications for optometric care.
• Recognise early signs of post-operative infection and understand the principles of endophthalmitis management
• Apply practical procedural knowledge to improve clinical confidence and interdisciplinary communication
• Improve techniques to remove corneal and conjunctival foreign bodies through animal eye models
• Understand how intraocular lenses are selected and how their power is determined based on ocular measurements and patient needs
