Activity Outline

This CPD activity provides a practical, evidence-based overview of Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery and its role in contemporary refractive care. The session will position ICL as a primary refractive option, outlining where it fits alongside laser and lens-based procedures. Key patient selection principles will be discussed, including high myopia, thin or irregular corneas, dry eye, and ectasia risk, as well as important contraindications and referral red flags. Clinical outcomes, safety considerations, and modern risk-mitigation strategies will be reviewed. Clinical case studies will highlight referral timing, patient counselling, and the value of optometrist–ophthalmologist co-management. Significant attention will be devoted to the therapeutic optimisation of dry eye, along with a detailed review of general post-operative care — including medication regimens, management of elevated intraocular pressure, and related considerations.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the role of Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICLs) within contemporary refractive surgery.
  • Identify appropriate patient selection criteria, including refractive, anatomical, and lifestyle considerations. Use of UBM for accurate sizing
  • Recognise when ICL is preferable to corneal laser procedures, particularly in complex or borderline cases.
  • Appreciate clinical outcomes, safety considerations, and long-term performance of modern ICLs and how to optimise outcomes with therapeutic management of dry eye and glaucoma
  • Improve optometrist–ophthalmologist co-management, therapeutic management, and patient education.
