Activity Outline
Join Dr John Hogden and Dr Peter Beckingsale for an engaging evening of CPD designed specifically for optometrists who co-manage refractive and cataract patients.
In “When Biology Doesn’t Read the Brochure”, we’ll tackle the real-world complications of LASIK, PRK, SMILE, RLE and ICL — the red flags, the grey zones, and the moments where you don't have to be 6/6 to be 6/Happy. Expect practical guidance on early detection, structured co-management, and managing the occasionally unhappy refractive patient with confidence.
In our second session, we turn the spotlight on modern presbyopic IOLs — which technologies genuinely perform, which rely heavily on perfect patient selection, and where marketing hype can outpace optical reality. We’ll compare trifocal, EDoF and enhanced monofocal platforms, explore dysphotopsia and contrast trade-offs, and discuss how small refractive misses can make a big difference in premium outcomes.
This will be a candid, clinically focused discussion led by two highly experienced anterior segment surgeons who work closely with optometrists every day.
And because good debate deserves good food, the evening includes dinner at Rothwell's — an opportunity to learn in a more relaxed setting.
Learning Objectives
- Spot when healing becomes pathology — identify complications after LASIK, PRK, SMILE, RLE and ICL
- Separate normal from not-normal — distinguish expected postoperative findings from true complications
- Manage the optics and the emotions — recognise that refractive complications are often as much psychological as anatomical
- Define and diagnose “6/Happy”
- Know when to reassure, when to enhance, and when to call the surgeon — applying structured decision-making in co-management
- Differentiate the major presbyopia-correcting IOL categories (trifocal, bifocal, EDoF, non-diffractive EDoF, enhanced monofocal, small-aperture) and understand their underlying optical principles
- Identify which lens platforms consistently deliver functional spectacle independence — and which may underperform outside ideal patient selection
- Recognise the gap between marketing claims and clinical reality
