Activity Outline
Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, yet
traditional management approaches often rely on late-stage intervention,
allowing the disease to progress before more definitive treatments are
considered. This reactive model results in poor long-term outcomes, increased
patient burden, and higher healthcare costs. In this talk, we will explore why
we need interventional glaucoma—a proactive approach that prioritizes earlier,
procedural interventions to slow disease progression, reduce reliance on
long-term medication, and improve patient quality of life. By addressing the
shortcomings of current treatment paradigms and highlighting the benefits of timely,
structured intervention, this session will make the case for a fundamental
shift in how we manage glaucoma to preserve vision more effectively.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the Rationale for Interventional Glaucoma: Identify the limitations of traditional glaucoma management and recognize the need for a shift toward proactive, procedure-based interventions
- Explore Current and Emerging Interventional Approach: Gain insights into minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), laser therapies, and sustained drug delivery systems, and their role in early disease management
- Integrate Interventional Strategies into Clinical Practice: Learn how to select appropriate patients, assess cost-effectiveness, and incorporate interventional glaucoma treatments into routine ophthalmic care to optimize patient outcomes
- Prompt and early referral allows use of full breadth of glaucoma treatment options – from SLT to Preserflo MicroShunt
