Learning Objectives
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the lacrimal functional unit and its role in maintaining ocular surface homeostasis.
- Explain the pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for aqueous deficient dry eye disease
- Identify the prevalence, risk factors, and systemic associations of ADDE, including Sjögren syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Apply the DEWS II diagnostic algorithm to the clinical assessment of patients with suspected aqueous deficient dry eye.
- Interpret the results of Schirmer testing, tear meniscus height measurements, tear film break-up time, ocular surface staining, and other diagnostic investigations.
- Recognise clinical signs of severe aqueous deficiency, including filamentary keratitis and significant ocular surface disease.
- Differentiate aqueous deficient dry eye from evaporative and mixed dry eye presentations.
- Develop evidence-based treatment plans using both topical and systemic therapeutic options.
