Activity Outline
North Queensland Eye Health Seminar is a full day of innovated learning with a focus on the advances in diagnosis, and management, of eye health. The 2025 seminar will focus on two topics: The Eye in MS & Related Demyelinating Disorders and The Diabetic Eye.
Learning Objectives
- Outline the potential of AI and big data to transform how we can use "traditional" examinations to look beyond our current understanding of disease.
- Differentiate between the different forms of demyelinating conditions and their appropriate imaging investigations.
- Diagnose optic neuritis, distinguish the different subtypes of optic neuritis, determine the urgency, management and describe the prognostic implications of the diagnosis of optic neuritis
- Describe the risk factors for the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy, assess when diabetic retinopathy requires treatment, and outline what treatments are
- Describe the mechanism of action of new anti-diabetic drugs and assess the possible effects they can have on patients' ocular health
- Compare various ocular presentations in multiple sclerosis and other related autoimmune commotions such as NMO and MOGAD and discuss the differentiating features of these conditions.
- Engage in a two-way, interactive Q&A with the panel of presenters to gain deeper insight into the session’s topic.
- Describe the current approach to management of acute demyelinating events, as they relate to vision, and summarise the role of disease modifying therapy in MS.
- Describe the role of the primary care physician, discuss with patients about the addition of diabetic medications for non-glycaemic benefits, and assess patients that would likely not be suitable for these adjuvant medications
