Activity Outline

The OKKO Masterclass 360 Program is a full day event held on Sunday 8th March 2026. This year's Masterclass is celebrating 13 years of dedication to optometric education. It will feature engaging face to face presentation with significant time allocated for speaker to audience discussion and interaction. Keynote Speakers include Dr Matthew Russell, Dr Eve Hsing, Dr Delia Wang and Dr Inez Hsing. Guests speakers from Glaucoma Australia, MDFA and Optometry Australia will also share. 

Learning Objectives

• Further develop their clinical problem-solving skills in the management of various presentations
• Appreciate the usefulness of multimodal imaging in the diagnosis and management of retinal conditions
• Understand how patient lifestyle preferences, refractive goals, and ocular health status guide appropriate selection among monofocal, toric, multifocal, and extended-depth-of-focus IOL options.
• Recognise pre-operative factors such as ocular surface disease, corneal irregularity, and macular pathology that influence surgical planning and expected refractive outcomes.
• Understand common post-operative visual and refractive issues, including dysphotopsias, dry eye exacerbation, residual refractive error, and PCO, and how optometrists can effectively co-manage and counsel patients.
• Understand the role of Intraocular Collamer Lens (ICLs) and EDOF ICLs in managing refractive errors - indication, benefits, limitations and complications
• Understand potential intra- and post-operative complications such as vaulting issues, cataract formation, and endothelial compromise, and the optometrist’s role in monitoring and co-management.
• Understand the clinical basis and practical differences between SMILE, LASIK, PRK, TransPRK, and PTK in modern refractive surgery.
• Recognise the key patient factors - such as corneal thickness, topography, refractive error, and lifestyle needs - that determine suitability for each procedure.
• Understand expected visual outcomes, healing characteristics, and post-operative considerations for each technique to support accurate counselling and co-management.
• Understand the psychosocial impacts of macular disease and recognise how person-centred support programs can improve patient wellbeing, daily function, and treatment adherence.
• Understand the basic pathogenesis and epidemiology of age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
• Identify structural biomarkers on SD-OCT and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) diagnostic testing that are associated with GA development and progression
• Understand the basic mechanism(s) of action of intravitreal complement inhibitors
• Accurately identify patients who are suitable for intravitreal complement inhibitors (and conversely, those who are not)
• Understand the ongoing importance of basic fundamentals of an eye examination such as case history and slit lamp examination, alongside newer technologies such as SD-OCT scanning
• Understand the role of systemic disease on glaucoma development and management
• Confidently exclude secondary causes when diagnosing or managing a patient with glaucoma
• Identify key clinical presentations and characteristic features of sebaceous gland carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and intraepidermal carcinoma.
• Differentiate these malignancies from chalazion using critical diagnostic clues and red flags.
• Understand current management pathways for sebaceous gland carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and intraepidermal carcinoma to support appropriate and timely referral.
• Identify key diagnostic clues and red flags associated with upper and lower eyelid malpositions.
• Differentiate between congenital and acquired causes of eyelid ptosis and understand their clinical implications
• Evaluate and recommend appropriate surgical and non-surgical management strategies tailored to patient needs.
• Take a deeper delve into the latest diagnostic challenges, clinical diagnostic workup, and diagnostic devices and therapeutic/medical, laser and surgical management of current clinical topics and controversies in cataract, /refractive, glaucoma, macula and vitreoretinal disease.
• To review current examination techniques and diagnostic equipment available to optometrists when examining the macula and peripheral retina
• To better understand how to differentiate between common presentations of macular and retinal disease
• To cover management options for common presentations of macular and retinal disease
• Explain the mission and role of Glaucoma Australia in supporting optometrists and patients across the glaucoma care pathway.
• Evaluate how the SiGHTWiSE patient support program can be integrated into optometric practice to enhance patient education, adherence, and long-term glaucoma management.
• Interpret the key priorities of the National 2026 Action Plan for Glaucoma and their relevance to optometric practice, referral pathways, and collaborative care.
• Identify the scope and practical implications of upcoming oral prescribing changes, including how these developments influence clinical responsibilities, patient care, and regulatory compliance.
