Learning Objectives

  • Understand the current and future cataract and refractive lensectomy surgery IOL prescribing options; patient suitability criteri; pre operative assessment technologies; intraoperative processes, techniques and procedures and devices; therapeutic management pre-, post- and intra-operatively and expected refractive outcomes.
  • Understand the indications, contraindications and efficacy of secondary refractive surgical management options for patients undergoing cataract and refractive lensectomy surgery to optimise the refractive outcome and/or visual quality following the primary lensectomy and IOL insertion procedure.
  • To update optometrists on the current and emerging therapeutic, laser, MIGs and complex surgical (trabeculectomy/valves/shunts) advances for managing primary open-angle and angle-closure glaucoma and secondary glaucomas. Indications, contraindications, risks/benefits and efficacy both short and long term will be discussed and illustrated by evidence based clinical case studies.
  • Understand the pre, intra and post-operative therapeutic issues associated with eyelid and brow surgery
  • Evaluate a ptosis patient and understand the indications for ptosis repair and the surgical process involve including revision surgery
  • Evaluate dermatochalasis and brow ptosis, understand the differentiation between functional vs. cosmetic blepharoplasty and the indications for blepharoplasty vs. brow lift and combine procedures.
  • Differentiate features of benign vs. malignant eyelid lesions and understand referral guidelines, indications for referral and appropriate referral timeframes for various lesions
  • To review characteristic features of common anterior and posterior segment eye disease
  • To review therapeutic management of anterior segment disease and glaucoma
  • To review the role of diagnostic imaging and auxiliary testing in anterior segment, glaucoma, cataract and posterior segment disease
  • To highlight atypical presentations of eye disease, and recognising “red flags”
  • To provide an overview of differential diagnoses to common anterior segment eye conditions
  • To better understand how to manage anterior segment conditions which have been non-responsive to treatment or present atypically through therapeutic, laser and surgical treatments
  • To understand current and emerging future diagnostic imaging technologies for diagnosis and differential diagnosis of common macula and vitreoretinal conditions including age related macula degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal vascular disorders and less common hereditary and acquired vitreoretinal diseases
  • To understand current and emerging future therapeutic, laser and/or surgical management of common macula and vitreoretinal conditions including age related macula degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal vascular disorders and and less common hereditary and acquired vitreoretinal diseases
  • To review the role of Glaucoma Australia in supporting patients and eyecare practitioners
  • To provide an overview of what Glaucoma Australia has achieved in the last 12 months, and what is planned for the future
  • To provide the latest research and clinical findings established by Glaucoma Australia
  • Take a deeper delve into the latest diagnostic challenges, clinical diagnostic work up and diagnostic devices and therapeutic/medical, laser and surgical management of current clinical topics topics and controversies in cataract,/refractive, glaucoma, complex anterior segment, macula and vitreoretinal disease.
