Learning Objectives

  • At the completion of the CPD activity Optometrists should be able to recognise additional ocular pathologies relevant to a diagnosis of cataract
  • At the completion of the CPD activity Optometrists should have an awareness of how these pathologies may impact on a decision whether or not to proceed with cataract surgery
  • At the completion of the CPD activity Optometrists should have an understanding of how these pathologies may impact on what type of IOL to implant
  • At the completion of the CPD activity Optometrists should have an understanding of the different types of anaesthethetic options for their cataract patients. Whilst this is not directly in the area of optometry, fear of needles around the eye before and pain during cataract surgery can be one of the major impediments to optometrists' patients receiving better vision through cataract surgery.
  • At the completion of the CPD activity Optometrists should have a better idea of how patient anxiety regarding a procedure that may afford their patients better vision may be handled.
