Learning Objectives

  • Better understand the evidence-based management of patients with early diabetic macular oedema with good visual acuity, as guided by the Protocol V and OBTAIN studies
  • Develop a better understanding of the importance of the KeepSight program to dramatically increase the rates of eye examinations and reduce diabetes-related vision loss and blindness in Australia
  • Develop a step-by-step approach to the interpretation and grading of diabetic retinopathy within a fundus photo
  • Develop a better understanding of the ocular signs of Tuberous Sclerosis
  • Identify areas of strength as well as the shortcomings of the existing NHMRC guidelines in relation to their development and applicability to clinical practice
  • Better understand key infection control procedures for commonly used practice equipment and in routine optometric practice
  • Understand the clinical recommendations for optometrists and optometric management of patients at moderate-to-high risk of falling
  • Better understand the requirements of an ideal medical communication system and how this relates to optometric care
  • Develop a better understanding of the use of Artificial Intelligence in screening for retinopathy in the pre-diabetes and diabetes patient and the optometrist's role within such a model of eye care
  • Apply evidence-based nutrition care and integrate appropriate dietary recommendations into routine optometric practice in relation to the management of AMD
  • Develop an understanding of the active ingredients in skincare products and how they may impact on the skin around the eyes, eyelids and periorbital area
  • Establish a sound approach in the assessment and management of patients with inherited retinal diseases
  • Understand the properties of spectacles lenses which help to reduce transmission of damaging wavelengths of light
