Activity Outline

This CPD event will be an interactive and didactive face-to-face educational evening. Dr Michael Karpa, Dr Nishan Ramachandran and Ms Sarah Golfis (Clinical Optometrist) will be delivering lectures about testing challenging patients, vitreoretinal cases, and oculoplastics. The topics that will be covered are low vision patients, testing children, retinal detachments, surgical macular pathology and the anatomy and pathophysiology of entropion and ectropions. This interactive session will be based on clinical scenarios and open discussion.

This event will be held by Best Practice Eyecare and sponsored by Seqirus. It will be held at The Lakehouse Sunshine Coast in Mountain Creek on the 5th August 2025 from 5:30pm - 9pm (Education: 6-9pm).

Welcome drinks and a three-course dinner will be provided. In addition, this function will also provide networking opportunities and a chance for optometrists to obtain CPD Hours.

Our keynote speakers are Dr Michael Karpa and Dr Nishan Ramachandran our Ophthalmologists, and Ms Sarah Golfis our Clinical Optometrist.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the most common causes of low vision in Australia
  • Understand how to determine the appropriate option for testing a person with low vision
  • Understand appropriate ways to conduct an eye test on a child and the normative values for each age group
  • Understand alternative testing options for adults with intellectual disabilities
  • To gain an appreciation of retinal Detachment a) urgency b) complications and c) choice of tamponade
  • To gain an understanding of when to act on surgical macular pathology a) Macular hole b) Epiretinal Membrane c) Vitreomacular traction
  • To gain an understanding of diagnosing and treating post-op cystoid macular oedema via eye drops and by other means.
  • Understand the anatomical and pathological mechanisms underlying entropion and ectropion
  • Differentiate the clinical presentations and causes of various eyelid malpositions
  • Recognize key clinical signs associated with eyelid malposition
