Learning Objectives
- To be able to analyse the macular OCT layer by layer to understand the pathology and resolve differential diagnoses.
- To be able to identify macular neovascularization and determine urgency of treatment.
- To be able to assess urgency of referral of diabetic macular oedema and diabetic retinopathy
- To identify disorders of the vitreomacular interface and determine need for referral
- Understanding Glaucoma and Structural Changes: To provide a foundational understanding of glaucoma, including the pathophysiology, structural changes that occur in the eye, and the importance of early detection.
- Understanding OCT in Glaucoma Diagnosis: To delve into how OCT technology can be specifically applied to detect and monitor glaucoma, focusing on the principles and techniques involved.
- Interpretation of Glaucomatous Changes through OCT: To equip optometrists with the skills to interpret OCT images in glaucoma, identify the characteristic signs, and differentiate them from normal variations.
- Integration into Glaucoma Care: To explore how OCT can be seamlessly integrated into optometric practice for glaucoma screening, monitoring, and referral, enhancing collaboration with ophthalmologists.
- To understand why all patients with cataract should undergo macular OCT prior to cataract surgery
- To understand the reasons why subclinical macular pathology can alter IOL choices for cataract surgery patients
- To demonstrate knowledge of common macular pathologies impacting surgical decisions and patient expectations in the setting of cataract surgery
- To discuss case studies of patients in whom pre-operative macular OCT has changed the IOL recommendation or surgical plan
