Dr. Irene Tan

Topic: Glaucoma: When Secondary Conditions Complicate the Picture

Synopsis: This talk will explore a range of glaucoma presentations, including cases complicated by secondary conditions that can alter diagnosis and management. Using case-based learning, participants will revise how to differentiate primary glaucoma and assess contributors to potential secondary conditions and recognise when management needs to be modified or escalated.  This session will focus on clinical decision making and provide confidence for optometrists in management and co-management of glaucoma. Also included will be a review of referral guidelines.

Learning objectives:

  1. Recognise the key clinical features of glaucoma and identify secondary contributing conditions that may influence diagnosis.
  2. Understand how to prioritise glaucoma management based on disease severity, risk of progression, and patient factors.
  3. Interpret relevant tests (Including OCT, visual fields and IOP profile) to support accurate diagnosis and monitoring.
  4. Identify clinical signs and scenarios that indicate the need to escalate medical therapy or refer for interventional or surgical management.

Dr. Maria Franchina

Topic: The Neuro & Kids Quiz

Synopsis:  This session is designed to assist clinical reasoning in both paediatric and neuro-ophthalmic presentations. Through discussing clinical cases, we will reinforce the interpretation of key investigations used in neuro and paediatric ophthalmology and support more confident diagnosis. The session will also review referral thresholds and guidelines for navigating more challenging or atypical cases.

Learning objectives:

  1. Recognise and differentiate common and important neuro-ophthalmic presentations relevant to optometrists.
  2. Identify less common but clinically significant paediatric eye conditions that warrant further investigation or referral.
  3. Interpret key diagnostic tests used in neuro-ophthalmic and paediatric assessment to support accurate clinical decision-making.
  4. Determine when escalation of care or urgent referral is indicated based on clinical findings.

Dr. Pav Gounder

Topic: Reviewing Sagging Lids

Synopsis: This session will help optometrists distinguish the difference between upper lid dermatochalasis and upper lid ptosis, and recognise the contribution of the eyebrow position to sagging lids. Through exploring case studies, we will discuss referral pathways and which surgical options correct each anatomical issue. The session will also include practical tips to help optometrists confidently assess lid position in-clinic and know when and where to refer.

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand the difference between ptosis and excess upper lid skin.
  2. Understand how eyebrow position influences upper eyelid appearance
  3. Understand when brow ptosis is the primary driver of sagging lids versus when eyelid surgery is indicated.
  4. Understand the different surgical options for brow ptosis, upper lid ptosis, and upper eyelid skin.

Dr. Vignesh Raja

Topic: When One Diagnosis Isn’t Enough: Navigating Eyes with Multiple Retinal Pathologies

Synopsis: In clinical practice, optometrists often encounter eyes with overlapping pathologies. This talk explores how to recognise, prioritise, and manage multiple co-existing retinal diseases within the same eye. Through illustrative cases and multimodal imaging examples, we will discuss diagnostic pitfalls, referral timing, and practical management strategies to optimise visual outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognise key multimodal imaging features that help differentiate overlapping retinal pathologies.
  2. Interpret OCT, fundus autofluorescence, and angiographic findings when more than one disease process is present.
  3. Apply a structured approach to optimise patient outcomes when more than one retinal diagnosis co-exists.
  4. Refine referral and co-management decisions to ensure timely ophthalmic intervention while maintaining continuity of optometric care.

This is an In Person CPD event only.
