This educational event will address a number of topics relevant to the treatment of paediatric eye conditions.
Learning Objectives
- Know how to assess vision in babies
- Recognise features of poor visual function in babies
- Appreciate the causes of severe vision loss in babies
- Recognise causes of esotropia in babies
- Understand the differences between pseudostrabismus and strabismus
- Appreciate the utilisation of clinical photography to assess ocular alignment in babies
- Have awareness of the StePS (Statewide Eyesight Preschooler Screening) program
- Recognise criteria for referral to an eyecare professional
- Have a basic understanding of prescribing glasses in school children
- Understand the risk factors for myopia development
- Be aware of strategies for avoiding the onset and progression of myopia
- Implement basic management approach to controlling myopia progression
- Appreciate causes of a red eye (s) in children
- Recognise red flags signs of serious ocular disease in children with a red eye
- Understand when to refer children with red eye (s)
- Understand symptoms described by children who say ‘ weird’ things
- Recognise causes of children presenting who say ‘weird’ things
- Appreciate when symptoms of children who say ‘weird things’ which would prompt a referral
- Understand the causes of a swollen eye
- Recognise clinical differences between periorbital and orbital cellulitis
- Know when to refer a child with a swollen eye
