Learning Objectives

  • 1. Confidently perform a visual and ocular motility assessment of an infant 2. Recognise red flags in the examination of an infant 3. Differentiate pseudo strabismus from a true strabismus
  • 1. Familiar clinical diagnostic features of Infantile esotropia 2. Familiar differential diagnosis of infantile esotropia. i.e. 6th nerve palsy 3. familiar with management principles, time of surgery etc in infantile esotropia
  • 1. Identify risk factors for the development of accommodative esotropia and the effect of accommodative esotropia on visual development 2. Be able to undertake a comprehensive initial assessment of a child with esotropia 3. Be able to initiate appropriate refractive correction and amblyopia management of a child with accommodative esotropia and understand when referral for surgical intervention is needed.
  • 1. Understand the features of Duane’s retraction syndrome 2. Understand the differential diagnoses associated with Duane’s retraction syndrome 3. Understand the management of Duane’s retraction syndrome
  • 1. Learn how to perform Park-Bielschowsky test 2. How to recognise 4th nerve palsy presentation 3. How to manage 4th nerve palsy
  • 1. Clinical assessment of IXT 2. Introduction and using a novel algorithm in individually customising overminus lens correction in the treatment of intermittent exotropia 3. Understand why customised overminus lens correction is superior to conventional ‘fixed-overminus’ – outcome of clinical trial
  • 1. How to differential features of disc drusen vs papilloedema 2. Correct diagnosis, or mis diagnosis of kids with IIH 3. Clinic methods to work true visual loss from functional visual loss in kids
  • 1. Identification of acute strabismus 2. Causes of acute strabismus in children 3. Acute concomitant esotropia
