Learning Objectives

  • Have a better understanding of new technologies in cataract surgery that allow the patient a greater chance of not only improved vision, but also a reduced spectacle dependence.
  • Have a better understanding of how minimally invasive techniques such as implementation of the I-Stent at the time of cataract surgery can help lower intraocular pressure and treat glaucoma, often allowing patients to come off their eye drops for glaucoma.
  • Have a better understanding of age-related macular degeneration and the various medicines that can be given as an intraocular injection to try and manage the wet form of macular degeneration.
  • Have a better idea of laser vision correction surgery, who it may or may not be suitable for, and the difference between traditional LASIK surgery and the newer technique of SMILE.
  • Appreciate considerations relevant to cataract surgery in patients with diabetes in relation to timing of cataract surgery and lens selection
  • Understand diagnosis and management of macular oedema in diabetic patients following cataract surgery.
  • Have better understanding of the management of diabetic co-morbidity.
  • Appreciate considerations relevant to the risk of cystoid macular oedema in the general population and diabetic patients.
  • Understand diagnosis and management of Ocular Trauma.
  • Understand diagnosis and management of Neuro-ophthalmic emergencies.
  • Understand diagnosis and management of retina emergencies.
  • Better understand a number of specific retinal diagnosis via case presentations.
  • Better understand management of certain retinal issues via case presentations.
